Abstract
Preparing polyhydroxyphenylchromones from the dried fruits of Silybum marianum Gaertn by removing the larger part of the fatty oils by submitting the fruit to elevated pressure, pref. in helicoid presses and extracting the residue with ethyl acetate. After removing the solvent, the residue is portioned repeatedly between the phases of a solvent system of aqs. methanol/petrol ether to give a final product contng. 70-80% active components. Crystallisation after treatment with active carbon gives then pure silymarin I. Silymarin is a protecting agent and stabilising agent for intracellular biomembranes where cytometabolism takes place. The process is much shorter and economical than existing ones, by eliminating the larger part of fatty oils before extraction. The process gives a high yield of good purity.
