Abstract
1,262,083. α-Calcium sulphate hemihydrate. BPB INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 May, 1969 [28 May, 1968], No. 25495/68. Heading C1A. α-Calcium sulphate hemihydrate is prepared by mixing a crystal habit modifier with powdered gypsum, agglomerating the mixture into discrete masses such as pellets or briquettes and calcining these masses in an autoclave containing saturated steam preferably under a steam pressure of between 20 and 75 p.s.i.g. The crystal modifier is suitably succinic, maleic, citric, phthalic or malic acid, a soluble salt thereof or a derivative such as methyl succinate and itaconic acid, and can be intimately dispersed throughout the powdered gypsum either in a powdered form or by spraying or otherwise moistening the gypsum with a solution of the modifier. After calcining and drying, the product may be ground down to give the desired "normal consistency" (defined). In the examples the milled products consisted of crystals between 30 and 50 microns in size and had surface areas between about 7000 and 8000 sq. cm./g.
