An electro-mechanical register in which numerical information is fed manually or automatically from say a punched tape or a computer, comprises a keyboard, Fig. 18 (not shown), which operates a combination of switches (1, 2, 4, 8) energizing a corresponding number of solenoids which determine the angular rotation in turn of a set of gears acting as a store, which rotation is transferred to print wheels for parallel visual read out. Energization of one or more solenoids 1, 2 &c., Fig. 17, on partial depression of any key moves a corresponding number of stops, e.g. 172, out of the path of sidewardly movable pins 152 of a friction driven paddle wheel 151 which advances a corresponding number of pins when a " go " solenoid 209 is energized on full depression of a key. On release of the solenoid(s) the pins are returned to the inoperative, i.e., left-hand position. Paddle wheel movement is transmitted through gears to an input gear 105 meshing in turn with each of storage gears 37 which are held from rotation in other than the meshing position by a spline on elements 106, 107. Depression of a print key (500) energizes a solenoid (66) which moves the gears into engagement with racks 13, Fig. 1, and also a solenoid (66A) which engages a machine clutch causing a forward, i.e., left-hand movement of the racks which each advance to a position corresponding to the remainder of the travel of the gears 37 to the zero position and hence print wheels 12 are also rotated correspondingly. Solenoids (66, 66A) are held energized for half a machine cycle by a cam-operated switch (560). The printing mechanism may be of known type and on completion of the left-hand movement of racks 13, a paper tape is brought against the type wheels. Subsequently the wheels are restored in zero position on spring return of the racks to their home position. Information may be entered through a remote keyboard or a local or remote punched tape, and machines may be run in parallel. Electrical signals from the switches may be transmitted to a computer also the printer may be controlled from such computer. [GB1232420A]
