Abstract

1,240,526. Diamond compacts. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 1 Aug., 1968 [8 Sept., 1967], No. 36802/68. Heading C1A. A high strength coherent polycrystalline diamond compact consists essentially of a plurality of boron-doped diamond particles which particles contain at least 0.01% by weight boron; said compact containing no more than 2% by weight of a material other than diamond, such material if any being boron, tantalum, molybdenum, titanium and carbides of these elements; said compact having a density in excess of 91% of the theoretical density of single crystal diamond. The diamond particles are preferably less than 20 microns. The compacts may be produced by compacting the boron doped diamond particles with or without the additive material either as a matrix or coating on the diamond particles at a pressure in excess of 50 kilobars and a temp. in excess of 1300‹ C. to form the desired high strength coherent compact. The compacting step may be performed in a reducing environment. [GB1240526A]
