Abstract
1,203,143. Evaporators; crystallization of sugar. ATELIERS BELGES REUNIS S.A. 30 April, 1968 [2 May, 1967], No: 20517/68. Heading B1B. An evaporator for producing uniform crystals from a solution, e.g. of sugar, comprises an elongated, generally horizontal chamber 1 which has a downwardly-inclined bottom and increases progressively in cross-sectional area from end A to end B, and is provided with a heat exchanger 12 formed by a series of vertical transverse walls connected in pairs by vertical longitudinal walls of relatively small width, the area of heating surface per unit length of chamber increasing from end A to end B. The interior of the heat exchanger is supplied with steam from source V. Sugar solution is introduced into chamber 1 through tubes 3 1 .. 3 7 and seed crystals are supplied through tube 5. A suspension of crystals in boiling solution ascends the vertical passages 18 through the heat exchanger on one side of the chamber, and the solution descends on the other side, so that the suspension advances in a helicoidal path from end A to end B. The grown crystals suspended in solution are discharged through conduit 7. Vapours are discharged through orifice 19, which may be connected to a condenser and vacuum pump. The sugar solution may be boiled at a temperature of 70‹C. In a modified evaporator, the chamber I is divided into compartments by transverse partitions having openings, and the steam chamber of the heat exchanger is divided into two sections each connected to the steam source by a separate valve-controlled line. The bottom of the evaporator chamber and the side near which ascending movement of the suspension occurs are provided with a heating jacket.
