COMPLETE SPECIIFICATION
Improvements in cigarettes with filter plugs or other internal mouth-
pieces and methods and machinery used in their production.
Patent application by Ardath Tobacco
Company Limited, a British company, of
1-15 Worship Street, London, E02, Eng-
land, in part assignees of Joseph Neal
Sweeney, of 42a Brampton Grove, Hendon,
London, N .W.4., England and Brian Michael
Green, of 245 Haverstock Hill, Hampstead,
London, N.W.3., England, both British
subjects.
This invention relates to cigarettes with
filter plugs or other internal mouthpieces,
and to methods and machinery used in their
production.
When such a cigarette is smoked dovm
close to the filter plug or other internal
mouthpiece there is a tendency for the burn-
ing tobacco “coal” to fall out, thus incurr-
ing a fire danger.
The object of the present invention is to
avoid or minimise this Gefect, but Without
involving any or any appreciable adhesive
attachment of the tobacco to the paper cover-
ing in the completed cigarette, prior to the
smoking thereof, so that if the cigarette
should be rejected for any reason and not
smoked, all the tobacco (except possibly a
trace) can readily be separated from the
paper and recovered for re—use by the manu-
factnrer.
The present invention consists in a cigar-
ette With a filter plug or other internal mouth-
piece in which the paper covering enclosing
the tobacco has applied adjacent the mouth-
piece an internal coating which includes fire-
retardants and has been so applied or is of
such a character that normally it does not‘
adhere or adhere appreciably to the tobacco,
but is such that When the cigarette is smoked
down close to the end of the tobacco portion
the heat or other effects of the smoking will
not cause the coating to burn substantially,
but will render the coating effective as an
adhesive so that the adjacent tobacco will
then stick to the paper covering and thus
the burning tobacco "coal” is retained or
tends to be retained within the paper cover-
ing Without falling out, but if the cigarette
is rejected for any reason and not smoked,
all the tobacco can readily be recovered (e.g.
by slitting the paper covering), and no tobac-
co or only a trace of tobacco will be left ad-
hering to the paper.
The present invention also consists in cigar-
— ette lengths adapted to be used making such
cigarettes, and" in methods of manufacture
and cigarette making machines as set out in
Price Two Shillings and Sixpence.

Various forms of the present invention are
diagrammatically indicated in the accom-
panying drawings, in which :—
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal cross section of one
form of the improved cigarette, being of the
kind in which the paper covering enclosing
the tobacco does not extend to enclose the
filter plug or other internal mouthpiece but
is secured thereto by an encircling band ;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross section of
another form of the improved cigarette, being
of the kind in which the paper covering en-
closing the tobacco extends so as also to
enclose the filter plug or other internal mouth-
piece ;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal cross section of
an improved cigarette length to be combined
with internal mouthpiece material to make a
cigarette as indicated in Fig. 1 ;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal cross section of
another form of improved cigarette length to
be combined with internal mouthpiece ma-
terial to make two cigarettes each as indicat-
ed in Fig. 1 ;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal elevation of an
improved cigarette making machine for use
in making cigarette lengths as indicated in
Figs. 3 and 4 I
Fig. 6 is a partial longitudinal elevation
thereof to a larger scale ;
Fig. 7 also to a larger scale than Fig. 5
indicates a partial longitudinal section there-
of.
Referring to Fig. 1, the cigarette there
indicated is of the known kind including’ a
tobacco portion 1 enclosed by its paper
covering 2, the Whole being secured to a
filter plug or other internal mouthpiece 3 by
an encircling band 4.
In this kind of cigarette the paper covering
2 does not extend to enclose the filter plug
or other internal mouthpiece 3.
Referring to Fig. 2, the cigarette there in-
dicated is of the known kind including a
tobacco portion 1 enclosed by its paper
covering 2, that extends so as also to enclose
a filter plug or other internal mouthpiece 3.
The present invention can be applied to
cigarettes of both these kinds, and in each
case the paper covering 2 has adjacent the
mouthpiece 3 an internal coating 6 which
includes fire retardants and has been so
applied or is of such a character-that it does
not adhere or does not adhere appreciably to
the tobacco under normal conditions, that is,
prior to the smoking of the completed cigar-
ette, but is such that when the cigarette is
smoked down close to the end of the tobacco
portion, the heat or other effects of the smok-
ing Will not cause the coating to burn sub-
stantially, but will render the coating effec-
tive as an adhesive so that the adjacent
tobacco 5 will stick to the paper covering 2,
and thus the burning tobacco “coa ” is re-
tained or tends to be retained within the
paper covering without falling out.
If, however, the cigarette is rejected for
any reason and not smoked, then it will be
possible for the manufacturer readily to re-
cover for re-use all the tobacco therein _(e.g.,
by the usual operation of slitting the paper
covering) and no tobacco or only a trace of
tobacco will be left on the paper.
The kind of cigarette shown in Fig. 1 is
conveniently made by first making cigarette
lengths of the kind shown in Fig. 3, such
cigarette lengths including at one end a suit-
able coating 6. This cigarette length" is then
combined in a known machine With internal
mouthpiece material 3 to make the cigarette
indicated in Fig. 1, in which said mouthpiece
material 3 is secured to the cigarette length
by "an encircling band 4, which then consti-
tutes a "cor ” or like tip. '
Alternatively and more conveniently a.
cigarette length of the kind shown in Fig.
4 may first be made, such cigarette length
being of double the length indicated in Fig.
3 and including at each end a suitable coat-
ing. This cigarette length is then combined
in a known machine with internal mouth-
piece material 3 at each end to make (after
bisection at the line 7) two cigarettes as in-
dicated in Fig. 1, in which in each of the
two cigarettes the mouthpiece material 3 is
secured to the cigarette length concerned by
an encircling band 4.
Practically any substance used as an ad-
hesive which will run satisfactorily is suitable
for use as a coating, provided that it in-
cludes fire-retardants so that it will not burn
or not readily burn, and provided that when
dry it can be rendered effective as an ad-
hesive by the heat or other effects of smok-
mg.
The method of application of the coating
will differ depending on whether or not the
coating, after operative application while wet
is effective as an adhesive when dried.
When, after such application, the coating is
effective as an! adhesive and remains so
effective when dried, it will be necessary to
dry it or substantially dry it by heat, or to
substantially so dry its upper surface before
the tobacco comes into contact with it.
A suitable coating of this type is :—
A highly dextrinised starch containing
approximately
Claims (11)
1. A cigarette with a filter plug or other internal mouthpiece, in which the paper covering enclosing the tobacco has applied adjacent the mouthpiece an internal coating which includes fire-retardants and has been so applied or is of such a character that normally it does not adhere or adhere apprec- iably to the tobacco, but is such that when the cigarette is smoked down close to the end of the tobacco portion, the heat or other effects of the smoking will not cause the coating to burn substantially, but will render the coat- ing effective as an adhesive so that the adjac- ent tobacco will then stick to the paper cover- ing, and thus the burning tobacco “coal” is retained, or tends to be retained, within the paper covering without falling out, but if the cigarette is rejected for any reason and not smoked, all the tobacco can readily be re- covered (eg, by slitting the paper covering) and no tobacco or only a trace of tobacco will be left adhering to the paper.
