Abstract

PVC based compsns. of improved heat resistance are prepd. from powdered PVC, monomer(s), crosslinking agents, and free radical catalyst. The mixt. is homogenised and dispersed with agitation in water which contains emulsifying agent and colloid stabiliser. The dispersion is maintained at 20-90 deg.C until conversion of monomers is complete. The compsn. is then filtered, dried, and processed by conventional means. This compsn. has increased heat stability. Relative proportions of the components can be varied within wide limits, without the risk of sepg. phases. The method is controlled with ease and is environmentally acceptable. Monomers used are acrylic acid, methacrylates, styrene and derivs. of styrene. Suitable crosslinking agents contain two or more vinyl acrylic, methacrylic and allyl gps.. The dispersion should contain, 5-70% PVC, 1-50% monomer(s), 0.1-5% crosslinking agent (based on monomers)
