Abstract

Aliphatic diesters of succinic acids are prepd. by a heterogeneous catalytic reaction, between maleic-acid-anhydride (I), aliphatic alcohols of not more than 6C (II) and hydrogen (III). Catalyst consists of platinum gp. metal/s on inert support. (I) is dissolvent in a relevant succinic-acid-diester or in a water and alcohol free reaction product. This and a separate stream of (II) is brought into contact with the catalyst together with pure (III) or a mixt. of (III) (more than 50%) and inert nitrogen at 140-280 deg.C and at a pressure at which the alcohol is maintained in a liq. state.
