Abstract

A data storage system comprises a user token (202) for storing data, and a data terminal (104) for reading from and writing to the token (202). The data terminal (104) includes a first module for generating a digital signature from at least some of the data and for writing the data and the signature to the token (202) and a second module for reading the data and the signature from the token (202), for regenerating the signature from at least some of the data in the same manner as the first module, and for comparing the signature read from the token with the regenerated signature to determine whether the signature is authentic. The data form which the signature is generated may be token identification data. The token identification data may be read from the token direct. Signature generation may additionally comprise an incremented counter.
