Abstract

A power tool (10) with a shaft locking mechanism has a member (30) which is rotatable about a pivot (36) on the housing. The member (30) has a first projection (26) which rotates the member (30) between an engaging and a disengaging position. A gear (60) is secured to the output shaft (16) of the power tool (10) . In a first position, the member (30) does not engage the gear (60). When the first projection (26) is moved, the member (30) rotates such that a second projection (40) engages the gear (60). When the second projection (40) engages the gear (60), this prohibits rotation of the output shaft (16). To disengage the member, the first projection (26) is moved in the opposite direction which, in turn, disengages the second projection (40) from the gear (60) enabling rotation of the output shaft (16). <IMAGE>
