Abstract
An electrochemical method having both high-rate conversion of nitrate ions and high selectivity of nitrogen production (about 90 per cent), which is based on the use of a tin cathode at high cathodic potential (-2.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl) is presented. Thismethod is effective in any nitrate concentration, as well as in any concentration of chloride or carbonate/bicarbonate ions. The final concentration of both nitrate and nitrite is under the maximum contaminant level (MCL) in drinking water. The method can be applied for the reduction of nitrite, as well.
