Abstract
999,768. Unloading by trimming. W. J. WALLACE. Aug. 18, 1961 [Aug. 19, 1960], No. 29926/61. Heading B8E. An endless chain of buckets is used to trim a mass of loose material by supporting the chain between horizontally spaced guides above the mass of material and allowing the lower run of the chain to hang freely so that when the chain is circulated the buckets ride over the mass and remove material from it. The trimmed material is subsequently dumped at a reversely curved bucket-inverting portion of the chain's upper run. As shown, for unloading material from a ship's hold 16, the guides are double sprocket wheels 32, 48 engaged with a double chain 58 between the individual chains of which the buckets are carried, the upper run 56 of the chain being supported above the ship's deck and the lower run 52 depending in a free catenary below it. By shortening or lengthening the chain, this catenary may be made to take up any of the forms 58 1 to 58 7 , or intermediately, in accordance with the depth of material in the hold. The chain may be passed through a guide at 86, which guide is reciprocable in a plane transverse to the plane of the Figure so that the chain of buckets may be swung across the hold from its normal central position to unload its marginal regions. The extra sprocket 60 is used to provide the reverse curvature in the upper run of the chain and thereby provide definite inversion of the buckets adjacent a take-away conveyer 72 into which the buckets are unloaded.
