Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3 and G3] The revolving blades 16 of a cut-off mechanism for a continuously moving web of corrugated board 13 are controlled either to operate in register with a design pre-printed on the board, by comparison of design position with blade position detected by photocell devices 22, 23 or to cut off controlled lengths of unprinted board by retro-actively adjusting mean blade speed in relation to web speed, as determined by tachogenerators 21, 20 in the corresponding drives. A single motor 17 drives web feeding belts 14 directly, and blades 16 through a differential 26, a variable speed gear 41 and a device 47 which accelerates the blades at every revolution to match the web speed at the instant of cutting, and is described in Specification 805,318. During register control, corrections are applied to the speed of a motor 24, energized from a generator 28, continuously driving the cage of differential 26, which has a 1 to 1 ratio when the motor 24 is running at " base speed," and the variable speed gear 41 and blade accelerating device 47 are adjusted only by hand, in the event of excessive correction being required. Change over to automatic length control is effected by movement of switches 56, 57 and idler wheel 32, which decouples correcting motor 24 and engages gears which lock the differential at 1 to 1 ratio. The switches de-energize register control panel 11 and energize a length controller 12, in which the difference in output of tachogenerators 20 and 21 is compared with a reference voltage representing desired sheet length; the resulting error signal drives a servomotor 46 which adjusts both the variable speed gear 41 (which determines mean blade speed) and the accelerating device 47 so that its operation is corrected for the new mean blade speed. The switches 56, 57 also provide an interlock for the drive motor 17, which is energized only when the gears are fully meshed.
