Abstract
Animal feed or drink preparations having a quieting effect and bringing about a better food conversion include a compound of the formula <FORM:0999394/A5-A6/1> in which R1 represents an alkyl or an alkoxyalkyl group, R3 represents an alkyl or a hydroxyalkyl group, and R4 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkoxy group, or an N-oxide of the compound or a physiologically tolerable salt of either compound, in admixture or conjunction with a solid feedstuff or water. Specifications 999,391 and 999,393 are referred to.ALSO:Animal feed or drink preparations having a quieting effect and bringing about a better food conversion include a compound of the formula: <FORM:0999394/A1-A3/1> in which R1 represents an alkyl or an alkoxy-alkyl group, R3 represents an alkyl or a hydroxyalkyl group, and R4 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkoxy group, or an N-oxide of the compound or a physiologically tolerable salt of either compound, in admixture or conjunction with a solid feedstuff or water. The compounds are exemplified by methyl 18-epi-O-R-reserpates wherein R stands for methyl, ethyl, n-propyl or iso-propyl, and their acid addition salts, particularly the hydrochlorides, sulphates or maleates. Poultry feeds may typically contain 0.001-0.1% and 0.00001-0.001% by weight of the compound for purposes of tranquillization and food conversion, respectively. The corresponding ranges for drinking water are 0.001-0.1% and 0.00001-0.001%, respectively. R1 represents C1 to C10 alkyl groups (including such isomeric radicals as iso-propyl, iso-butyl and iso-pentyl) and alkoxy-alkyl radicals in which the alkoxy portion contains 1 to 4 carbon atoms and the alkyl portion bearing the alkoxy group contains at least 2, but preferably 2 or 3, carbon atoms and separates this group from the ester oxygen atom by a least 2 carbon atoms e.g. 1:2 ethylene, 1:2-, 2:3- or 1:3 propylene or 1:4 butylene. R3 represents C1 to C10 alkyl groups or a hydroxy-alkyl group such as 2-hydroxy-ethel, 2- or 3-hydroxy-propyl, 4-hydroxy-butyl or 5-hydroxy-pentyl wherein the hydroxy group is separated from the 18-0-atom by at least 2 carbon atoms. R4 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkoxy group such as methoxy, ethoxy, n-propoxy-, iso-propoxy or n-butoxy in one of the positions 10 or 11. Many acids forming salts with the compounds are mentioned. The compounds may be obtained by the processes described and claimed in Specifications 999,391 and 999,393. The compounds may be mixed with feed components (many specified) or used in solution or dispersion in drinking water or skimmed milk. Examples are directed to (1) a feedstuff for tranquillizing poultry providing 0.05 gram of methyl 18-epi-O-methyl-reserpate hydrochloride per 1000 grams of a feed consisting of wheat middlings, corn meal and small amounts of other conventional ingredients, (2) drinking water with a tranquillizing effect containing 0.015% by weight of methyl 18-epi-O-n-propyl (or methyl)-reserpate hydrochloride, (3) a feedstuff additive based on extracted soya bean residues and cane sugar, and containing 2.3% by weight of methyl 18-epi-O-methyl-reserpate hydrochloride to provide 0.5% by weight of the reserpate in the full feed formulation disclosed, and (4) an additive for drinking water containing methyl 18-epi-O-methyl reserpate hydrochloride, tetrasodium salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid, monosodium salt of N:N-di-(2-hydroxyethel)-glycine, citric acid, sodium citrate and sucrose.
