Abstract

A fuel composition for use in I.C. engines comprises (a) a major proportion of a hydrocarbon mixture boiling in the gasoline boiling range, (b) organo-lead antiknock agent, (c) a bromohydrocarbon scavenger in an amount providing 0.9-1.1 gram atoms of bromine per gram atom of lead, and (d) a trihydrocarbyl phosphate or phosphite in an amount such that the bromine to phosphorus gram atom ratio is in the range 1.5 : 1 to 6.5 : 1, the composition being free of chlorohydrocarbon scavenger. Typical of these additives are: (b) tetra-methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, or amyl-lead; (c) ethylene dibromide, acetylene tetrabromide, 1,4-dibromobutane, dibromobenzene and dibromotoluene; and (d) tricresyl phosphate, 2,6-xylenyl di-(n-butyl) - phosphate, S,S-di-(2,6-xylenyl)-O-(n-butyl) dithiophosphate, O - a - methylbenzyl-O,S - diisopropyl thionophosphate, and an exhaustive list of similar phosphates and phosphites. The hydrocarbon mixture (a) may contain aromatic, olefine, paraffinic and naphthenic hydrocarbons and may be derived from any of the conventional refinery processes, typical being a mixture of catalytic reformate, catalytic cracked gasoline, straight run gasoline and butane.
