998,365. Vehicle unloading reach trucks. LANSING BAGNALL Ltd. Nov. 12, 1963 [Nov. 12, 1962; Jan. 15, 1963 (2); March 19, 1963], Nos. 42613/62, 1695/63, 1735/63 and 10889/63. Headings B8E and B8H. Apparatus for loading and unloading comprises a turn-table on a base mounting two reach mechanisms such as fork lifts facing in opposite directions. The base is preferably mounted on a vehicle running on a rail track. In the fork lift shown, a chassis 11 has wheels 12, 13 running on rails 14 and frame members pivoted to brackets 30 and connected by members 33 having wheels 34 on the rails 14. The chassis mounts control cabins and bases 24, 47 and a turn-table, driven by an electric motor through a pinion and gear-wheel, on which are supported beams 50, 51. A cross member 52 connects the beams 50, 51 and has wheels 53 which are supported on pads 35 in the position for the operation of the reach mechanisms. The fork lifts 91, 92, 101, 102 are mounted on masts having uprights 85, 86 mounted on runners 71, 73 on the beams 50, 51 which are staggered as shown in Fig. 4, so that the masts can be retracted back-to-back. The runners are mounted by wheels on the beams 50, 51 and reach is effected by electric motor drive to some of these wheels moving the masts. The forks 91, 92, 101, 102 are mounted on carriages on the masts raised and lowered by lead screw 103 driven by electric motors 96, 106. The chassis 11 may be driven along the rails 14 by electric motors 18. To transfer containers 141, Fig. 11, to and from rail and road vehicles 140, 143 unloading machines may be positioned at 150-152, the outer machines being operated through 90 degrees, before the centre machine is operated through 180 degrees, and then through a further 90 degrees to complete the operation. Alternatively, alternate containers may be moved by machines located on opposite sides of the train. The turn-tables may be mounted on fixed mounts in place of the movable chassis and the whole loading and unloading operation of all the machines may he automatically remotely controlled.
