Abstract

997,998. Heating liquids by direct contact with gases. SULZER FRERES SA. Jan. 23, 1963 [Jan. 26, 1962], No. 2935/63. Heading F4K. [Also in Division B1] Salt water is heated by passing it in the form of a flowing film adjacent to, but spaced from, a heat-emission surface, the pressure in the space between the film and the heat-emission surface being maintained above atmospheric pressure and at a value such that the water does not boil. The required pressure may be maintained by the presence of an inert gas. Heat exchange is said to be by radiation and by free convection of the medium in the space, presumably the inert gas, e.g. in paths 21 (Fig. 2). In the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, films of salt water flow down over surfaces 15 and 17, whilst heating-medium is passed through sinuous tubes 9. A modification is described in which the film-supporting surface is provided with horizontal channels; in another modification, the supporting surface is formed of wedge-shaped members. The supporting surfaces may be made of wood coated with a synthetic plastic. Provision may be made for cooling the film-supporting surfaces. In Fig. 9, heating-medium flows through tubular walls 80, 81 while the salt flows in the form of a free-falling " curtain " 90 between the hot walls. The water flows out of a slotted aperture 86 in horizontal tube 82. The top of this tube has apertures 83, and a film of water 85 flows over the surface of the tube and then joins the free-falling " curtain." An embodiment is also described wherein the film of salt water is formed on a travelling belt, which may be made of glass wool.
