Abstract

997,978. Automatic volume control circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Feb. 26, 1964, No. 7967/64. Heading H4R. [Also in Division HI] In an automatic volume control circuit the gain of an amplifier is controlled by an electrolytic variable resistance device. The Figure shows an amplifier 2 whose gain is controlled by the level of a pilot signal which is selected, amplified, and rectified in the pilot selector 4. The resulting D.C. level is compared with a reference level in the comparator circuit comprising transistors 5 and 6 and difference in the levels causes current to flow from the collector of one transistor to the collector of the other transistor through the electrolytic variable resistance device 8. The flow of current in the device 8 causes the plating, or deplating, of a layer of copper on the surface of a carbon substrate 12 from, or to, the copper electrode 11 via the copper sulphate electrolyte, thus reducing, or increasing, the value of the resistance between terminals 13 and 14. The resistance between terminals 13 and 14 is connected, via transformer 9, in the equalizer network 3 across the input to the amplifier 2, and a change in the value of the resistance produces a change in the attenuation of the equalizer network, tending to maintain the level of the pilot signal at the output of the amplifier constant. Relay contacts 15 are provided which are controlled, by means not shown, to open on an abnormally large deviation of the pilot level, such as may be due to a fault in the pilot circuit, so that, for the duration of such a condition no plating or deplating current can flow in the device 8 and the value of resistance 12 is maintained at its last known value.
