Abstract
A wax composition comprises a major amount of petroleum wax and a minor amount of a copolymer of ethylene with higher alpha olefins having an ethylene content of more than 95 mol. per cent or a homopolymer of ethylene, the polymerization product having an intrinsic viscosity as measured in decahydronaphthalene at 135 DEG C. of at least 6 dl/g. Proportions of 55-85 wt. per cent of wax and 45-15 wt. per cent of polymer are specified. Copolymers specified are ethylene with propylene and/or butylene-1. The composition may also contain at least one copolymer of ethylene with higher alpha-olefins having an ethylene content of less than 95%. The wax component may be (1) a heavy distillate wax separated from lubricating oils and having a melting range of 63-79 DEG C., (2) a wax separated from microcrystalline wax, or (3) a composition of 40-60% normal crystalline paraffin wax, about 25% heavy distillate wax, 5-20% microcrystalline wax and 0-40% of plastic paraffin wax. The composition may also contain fillers, e.g. kaolin pigments and/or other colouring matter.
