Abstract

Aromatic hydrocarbons are alkylated by reaction with a mono-olefin of at least 3 carbon atoms in the presence as catalyst of an alkyl aluminium dichloride. The aromatic hydrocarbon may be mono- or poly-cyclic and may contain alkyl or alkylene substituents. The olefin may be cyclic or acyclic with terminal or internal unsaturation. Reaction is effected at -10 DEG to 120 DEG C. and 0.1-50 atm. in the presence of 0.0001-0.1 mol. of catalyst per mol. of aromatic hydrocarbon in the absence of oxygen. A solvent may be present. Ethene does not react and the process may be used to remove olefin contaminants from ethene. Preferably, ethene is absent when the reaction is initiated.
