Abstract

Hydrocarbons having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, e.g. natural gas, and gases from processes involving catalytic reforming and partial combustion of hydrocarbons, optionally containing hydrogen, contaminated with hydrogen sulphide, and possibly also with carbon dioxide and/or carbon oxysulphide and/or water, are purified by contact with a sulphone of formula <FORM:0997169/C4-C5/1> wherein at least 4 of the RS are hydrogen and any remaining RS are alkyl groups having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The sulphone may be used in combination with hydrocarbons having 8 to 2 carbon atoms, and countercurrent contact may be effected in a tower fitted with suitable contact aids. Elevated temperatures and pressures may be used. The solvent may then be stripped at reduced pressure before being recycled, advantageously in the presence of the above-mentioned hydrocarbons having 8 to 12 carbon atoms, which are recovered by cooling the stripped gas. Hydrocarbons having 4 to 7 carbon atoms are recovered from the stripped gas by countercurrent scrubbing with a sponge oil predominantly composed of hydrocarbons having 8 to 12 carbon atoms, followed by stripping.ALSO:A process for purifying gases contaminated with hydrogen sulphide, and possibly also with carbon dioxide and/or carbon oxysulphide and/or water comprises contacting the gas with a sulphone of formula <FORM:0997169/B1-B2/1> wherein at least four of the R's are hydrogen, and any remaining are alkyl groups having 1-4 carbon atoms. Gases specified are hydrocarbons having 1-3 carbon atoms, which may contain hydrogen. The sulphone may be used in combination with hydrocarbons having 8-12 carbon atoms, and intimate countercurrent contact may be effected in a tower fitted with suitable contact aids. Elevated temperatures and pressures may be used. The solvent may then be stripped at reduced pressure before being recycled, advantageously in the presence of the abovementioned hydrocarbons having 8-12 carbon atoms, which are recovered by cooling the stripped gas. Hydrocarbons having 4-7 carbon atoms are recovered from the stripped gas by countercurrent scrubbing with a sponge oil predominantly composed of hydrocarbons having 8-12 carbon atoms, followed by stripping.
