A melt supporting shoe 6, e.g. for use in electro-slag welding vertical members 3, 4 is connected by a universal joint 8 to a positioning device 5 having a hand wheel adjustable to retract or to exert resilient pressure on the shoe 6 to move it across the seam 2 into engagement with the members 3, 4. The device 5 is pivotal about a vertical axis on a mounting 1 movable longitudinally of the seam 2.
