Abstract

996,945. Filters. J. MULLER. Oct. 25, 1963 [Oct. 30, 1962], No. 42183/63. Headings B1D and B1T. Fluid is filtered by passing first through one or more porous, resilient, tubular filter elements 14, then through a filter column 1 of flat rings 2 having radial grooves of triangular section, narrowest at the inlet ends, in one or both faces, the arrangement being cleaned by reversing the fluid flow, element(s) 14 being stretched thereby so that the pores enlarge to release solid matter. In Fig. 1, rings 2 are supported round a perforated tube 9. During normal flow (side A), element 14 is pressed against column 1, and during reverse flow for cleaning (side B) element 14 stretches into contact with retaining sheath 15. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), and Fig. 8, the resilient element 14 is inside the column of rings, normal flow being from inside to out. Reverse flow causes element 14 to be stretched around a support 17 of cruciform section, whose perimeter exceeds the normal circumference of element 14. A plurality of concentric resilient elements may be provided having similar or progressively smaller pore sizes. Resilient elements may be of fabric, or porous rubber or plastics. Rings 2 are pressed resiliently together by spring 8, and, if grooves are provided on both sides, are stacked with alternate smooth rings, Figs. 2-5 (not shown).
