Abstract

Solid sodium ammonium borate perhydrate compositions corresponding to from 1 to 2 moles of H2O2, 0.5 mole of Na2 and from 0.25 to 1 mole of NH3 per mole of B2O3 are prepared by adding borax (Na2B4O7.10H2O) with agitation to an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide and concentrated ammonium hydroxide. Upon evaporation a glassy product is obtained. The solution prior to evaporation may be used in the preparation of detergent compositions (see Division C5). A typical product has the formula <FORM:0996526/C1/1>ALSO:Granular compositions comprise a noncationic detergent and a borate perhydrate containing per mole of B2O3, 1 to 2 moles of B2O2 and 0.5 to 1 mole of alkali calculated as M2O, M representing at least one cation of sodium, potassium or ammonium. Preferably, the quantity of alkali is at least 0.63 mole, and it may be 0.5 mole of Na2O and 0.25 to 1 mole of NH3 per mole of B2O3. The active oxygen content may be 0.1 to 3% based on the composition weight. The detergent component may constitute 10 to 40% of the composition, the balance being additives such as alkali metal carbonates, borates, silicates, tri- and di-alkali metal orthophosphates, sodium sulphate; stabilizers such as sodium stannate; complexing agents such as sodium pyrophosphate, metaphosphate and tri-polyphosphate; organic chelating agents such as ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid, nitrilotriacetic acid; soil suspending agents such as carboxymethylcellulose and polyacrylates; colouring agents, optical brighteners, dyes, and abrasive agents such as silica. The detergent component may be a common soap, a sodium or potassium C10- 18 alkyl benzene sulphonate, higher alkyl sulphates, sodium and potassium fatty acid monoglyceride sulphates, acrylamide sulphonates, coconut fatty acid mono - ethanolamine amides, sodium and potassium salts of alkylphenol-ethylene oxide ether sulphates, condensates of ethylene oxide with alkylphenols, higher aliphatic alcohols or propylamine - ethylenediamine reaction products. The borate perhydrate solution may be added dropwise or by spraying to an agitated body of the granular detergent. The temperature of the detergent should not be above 55 DEG C., and is preferably ambient.
