Abstract

In an evaporative-coating process, the material to be evaporated, e.g. copper or glass, is supported directly on a resistance-heating element comprising a sheet 20 consisting substantially entirely of carbon. As shown, the <PICT:0996338/C6-C7/1> workpiece 51 to be coated is supported on a rotatable shaft in a housing which is evacuated or filled with argon, nitrogen or carbon dioxide through a tangentially-directed vent 42. The sheet 20 is woven from graphite fibres, and is supported between water-cooled holders 24, 26; 30, 32, which preferably give sheet 20 an arcuate or V-shaped cross-section.
