Abstract
Dispersing compositions comprise (1) a polyoxyethylene derivative of a monoester of sorbitan with a higher fatty acid having from 16 to 18 carbon atoms and (2) a lower polyethylene glycol having an average molecular weight in the range of from 200 to 600, the ratio by weight of said polyoxyethylene ester (1) to said glycol, (2) being from 4 : 3 to 9 : 1 respectively. Suitable sorbitan ester derivatives are the polyoxyethylene derivatives of sorbitan monopalmitate, sorbitan monooleate and sorbitan monostearate. Polyethylene glycols specified are those having average molecular weight of 200, 300, 400 and 600. The dispersing compositions are used for preparing rapidly water-dispersible Vitamin A fatty acid ester compositions (see Division A5).ALSO:A stable, readily water-dispersible Vitamin A ester composition comprises a Vitamin A higher fatty acid ester, wherein the acyl moiety of the ester has at least eight carbon atoms, and in admixture therewith and as dispersing agent therefor a mixture of (1) a polyoxyethylene derivative of a monoester of sorbitan with a higher fatty acid having from 16 to 18 carbon atoms and (2) a lower polyethylene glycol having an average molecular weight that is in the range of 200 to 600, said Vitamin A ester being present in said composition up to 20% by weight of the total and the ratio by weight of (1) to (2) being from 4 : 3 to 9 : 1 when said Vitamin A concentration is below 10% and from 4 : 3 to 5 : 1 when said Vitamin A concentration is at least 10%. The preferred Vitamin A esters are Vitamin A palmitate, Vitamin A corn oil fatty acid esters and Vitamin A coconut oil fatty acid esters. Sweetening and flavouring agents and preservatives such as methyl and propyl paraben may be added to the compositions. The compositions are used to form stable, aqueous Vitamin A solutions and may also be employed in the form of gelatine capsules, and in aqueous dispersions containing also water-soluble vitamins.
