A machine for inserting a nail into a structure, such as a floor board 36 and joist 14, comprises an adjustable clamping means 10, 11 for the machine and a guide 34 for the nail which is forced into the structure by means of a plunger 40 actuated via a lever 18 which also operates the clamping means. The lever 18 is secured to a shaft 17 rotatable in a bracket 16, the shaft carrying sprockets 20 for driving, via a chain 46 and idler sprockets 47, the plunger 40. The shaft also carries a cam plate 19 having a lobe 19a adapted to co-operate with a roller 24 mounted on a shaft 25 carried by a bracket pivoted on the bracket 16; a second cam lobe 19b is adapted to co-operate with a roller 58 mounted on a shaft 57 carried by slidable brackets 53 connected to a block 35 in which the nail guide 34 is secured. Guide plates 10, 11 are adjustably mounted on rods 12, 13 and carry screw members 31 rotatable by means of pinions 29 and racks 28. In operation, the machine is moved so that the block 35 contacts the tongue of a board 36 and the plates then adjusted to grip the joist 14. By moving the lever 18, the cam plate rotates thereby causing the shaft 25 to be rocked so as to engage the bent-over ends of the racks 26 and so cause rotation of the screw members 31; the screw members urge the bracket 16 downwardly so that spikes thereon engage the joist. Continued movement of the lever causes the block 35 to be pressed against the tongue and, via the chains, the plunger is moved downwardly to drive a nail into the board and joist. A magnet 39 is provided on the guide in order to retain a nail therein. In modifications, instead of the screwmembers 31, calipers arranged to grip the joist through the action of wedges may be used.
