Abstract

A polyolefin such as polypropylene is stabilized with (a) an organic sulphur compound, (b) a polynuclear polyphenol consisting of a benzene ring substituted with n 3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxybenzyl groups bound to n different ring carbon atoms and with 6-n alkyl groups bound to each of the remaining ring-carbon atoms, n being 3 or 4, and (c) a bis- or tris-phenolic compound obtained by reacting either a saturated or unsaturated aldehyde or ketone, or sulphur dichloride, with a phenol having at least one ortho ring-carbon atom bound to a secondary or tertiary alkyl group. Specified stabilizers are, for example: (a) dihydrocarbyl mono- or disulphides, dialkyl esters of thiodicarboxylic acids; (b) 1,3,5 - trialkyl - 2,4,6 - tris(3,5 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl)benzene; and (c) 1,1,3 - tris(2 - methyl - 4 - hydroxy - 5 - t. - butylphenyl) butane, thio-bisphenols.
