Abstract
993,929. Transverse-flow blowers. T. HELMBOLD. Sept. 20, 1963 [Sept. 20, 1962], No. 37168/63. Heading F1C. In a transverse-flow blower with a drumshaped rotor, a separator is provided between the intake and outlet ducts and in the vicinity of a standing vortex which forms during operation of the blower; the separator, in a direction substantially parallel to the rotor axis and against the direction of rotation of the rotor, terminates in a sharp edge, the sharp edge being disposed in the zone of the perpendicular from the rotor axis to that surface of the separator which faces the rotor. In the transverse-flow blower shown in Fig. 2, the inlet 2 is separated from the outlet 3 by a flat baffle 4 having a sharp edge 5 disposed in the region of a perpendicular 6 from the rotor axis 7 to the baffle. During operation, the usual vortex 8 forms, and the sharp edge 5 has a peeling action to separate the main flow from the vortex flow. To assist the action of the sharp edge 5, the rotor blades may have sharp edges, at least at the outer periphery of the blading. The clearance between the baffle 4 and the rotor periphery may be adjustable. A trough-shaped guide member 9, which may be adjustable, may be provided to stabilize the position of the vortex 8. If the flow through the outlet 3 is required to be other than parallel to the baffle 4, a deflector 11 set at the required angle is provided. This angle and the distance between the deflector 11 and the sharp edge 5 may both be variable. The distance must be sufficient to prevent a return flow into the inlet 2. The deflector 11 may be curved so as to merge into the baffle 4. As shown, the rotor 1 may have end plates 10 projecting radially beyond the outer periphery of the rotor blading to prevent air from flowing into the ends of the vortex 8. Guide plates 12 carried by the baffle 4 at a small distance from the end plates 10 may be provided to prevent air from flowing laterally around the baffle. The guide plates 12 may have curved portions which merge into the baffle 4 and may be integral with the latter. As shown in Fig. 6, the sharp edge 5 may be curved in the plane of the baffle 4. Instead of being flat, the baffle 4 may be curved so that its distance from the lateral parts of the rotor 1 is greater than its distance from the middle part thereof.
