Abstract
Durene is prepared by heating polyalkylbenzenes under atmospheric pressure at 40-110 DEG C. in the presence of 0.5-5 mol. per cent of anhydrous aluminium chloride, adding an equal or excess amount of water, separating the oily layer thus formed and separating durene from the oily layer by freezing out and filtering at - 20 DEG C. The polyalkylbenzenes may be those present in mineral oil and coal tar oil fractions and distillates. Specification 787,888 is referred to.
