Abstract
993,045. Jointing. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. April 26, 1962 [May 13, 1961], No. 17502/61. Heading B3V. A method of bonding a synthetic rubber composition to a metal surface, e.g. in the manufacture of metal tyre cords, instrument mountings, engine mountings and synthetic rubber metal springs, comprises vulcanising while in contact with the metal surface a vulcanizable synthetic rubber composition containing a minor proportion of a cobalt salt sufficient to provide a metallic cobalt content of from 0.09% to 1.5% by weight based on the synthetic rubber. The synthetic rubber composition includes butyl rubber, butadienestyrene copolymers which may be oil-extended, cis - polybutadienes, hydrogenated polybutadienes and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers. The cobalt salt is an organic salt including cobalt linoleate, naphthenate, stearate, oleate, acetate and resinate. The metal surface includes mild steel, tungsten steel, zinc and brass. Other metal surfaces may be coated with e.g. brass or zinc. When bonding butadiene-styrene copolymers to brass the cobalt metal content of the copolymers is from 0À1% to 1À2%, when bonding to zinc the cobalt metal content is from 0.2% to 1.2% and when bonding any of the polymers to mild steel the cobalt metal content is from 0.1% to 0À6%. Several examples of synthetic rubber compositions are given in the Specification.
