Abstract
In a process for manufacturing flat sheets of fibrous material of synthetic polymers by pouring an aqueous dispersion of fibres on suitable perforated bases, and de-watering and consolidating the flat structures, the fibres used have a smooth surface and are of such a form that plane surfaces are available for contact between the fibres, and the fleece produced from these fibres is dewatered before it is removed from the base to a residual moisture content of 30-79% calculated on the weight of the wet fleece. The fibres may be in the form of flat strips or have a cross-section approximately in the form of an isosceles triangle. In examples given, a polyamide of captolactam or of adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine, polyethylene terephthalate, or polypropylene, was spun through a 36 aperture nozzle. The threads obtained are stretched, washed in soap solution and cut to 2-6 mm. lengths. An 0.05% aqueous fibre dispersion has prepared and a dispersing agent-a sodium salt of a higher aliphatic sulphonic acidwas added. After stirring, the dispersion of a polypassed through a slot-shaped aperture on to a moving endless screen band provided with suction boxes and squeegee rollers. The fleece was then sprayed with a 10% aqueous dispersion of a polymethacrylic acid ester, or a synthetic resin based on polyvinyl chloride, or with a 5% methanolic solution of a copolyamide consisting of 60% hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid and 40% captolactam. The web was dried by heating and in some example pressure was then applied. Alternatively the fibres may be obtained by cutting up thin foils. Specifications 868,651 and 876,693 are referred to.
