Abstract

Alumina, especially Bayer alumin, is purified by dissolving in hydrochloric acid, subjecting the resulting solution to anion exchange with an anion exchanger, which may be a resin or a liquid amine anion exchanger, the latter optionally diluted with an inert organic diluent, or a solvent which is a trialkyl phosphate or phosphine oxide, a dialkylalkyl phosphonate, an alkyldialkyl phosphinate, each alkyl having 3 to 6 carbon atoms, or methyl isobutyl ketone. An organic diluent, especially kerosene may be used when methyl isobutyl ketone is not the solvent, tributyl phosphate being the solvent of choice. The alumina is preferably recovered from the aqueous phase by saturating with gaseous hydrogen chloride, and igniting the precipitated hexahydrate of aluminium trichloride. The gallium concentrate is recovered by washing the ion exchanger or solvent with a mixture of equal weights of water and concentrated hydrochloric acid, then extracting the gallium and other impurities with water to produce an aqueous solution, neutralizing the gallium containing solution with ammonia and firing the precipitate formed. The examples illustrate the use of solid anion exchangers, tributyl phosphate diluted with kerosene, and a liquid amine anion exchanger. Specification 991,613 is referred to.
