Abstract

In a vehicle having a sliding door, a tiltable seat or a tiltable seat back, a pair of co-operating latch members is mounted respectively on the vehicle body and the door, seat or seat back, and one of the latch members, when the vehicle is stationary is held clear of the other member by gravity and is pivotal into engagement with the other member to prevent relative movement between the door or seat or seat back and body when the change of momentum of the vehicle reaches a certain value. In the arrangement according to Fig. 1 in which a vehicle seat 1 is pivotal about an axis 7, a latch member 15 is pivoted to a bracket 5, connecting the seat to a back rest 3, and is engageable with a latch member 11, fixed to the vehicle body, upon deceleration of the vehicle, to thus prevent the seat from tipping forwards. In a similar arrangement Fig. 3 (not shown), the latch member 11 is also pivotally mounted. In another arrangement, Fig. 4 for a vehicle sliding door, apertures 27 and a rail 25 on the door co-operate, upon acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle with projections 35 on an arm 31 pivoted on the vehicle above the rail and actuated by a pendulum 29. In a similar arrangement, Fig. 6 (not shown), the arm 31 is mounted below the rail and in a modification of this arrangement, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) the pendulum is replaced by a weight movable along the base of the arm.
