Abstract
The invention comprises b -(1-adamantyloxy)-propionic acid and non-toxic salts thereof, pharmaceutical preparations containing them, and their preparation by (a) reacting 1-hydroxyadamantane (e.g. in the form of its sodium derivative) with a reactive ester of the formula <FORM:0991297/C2/1> (wherein X represents the acid residue of the ester), debenzylating the resulting 1-(2-benzyloxyethoxy)-adamantane, esterifying the resulting 2-(1-adamantyloxy)-ethanol with a toluene-p-sulphonyl halide, reacting the resulting 1 - (2 - toluene - p - sulphonyloxyethoxy)-adamantane with an alkali metal cyanide and hydrolysing the resulting b -(1-adamantyloxy)-propionitrile, or (b) reacting 1-hydroxyadamantane with b -propiolactone at elevated temperature, optionally followed in either case by salt formation if a salt is not obtained directly. The compounds of the invention are choleretics and may be administered orally, rectally or parenterally in the form of pharmaceutical preparations (e.g. compressed tablets, pills, dispersible powders, granules, emulsions, solutions, suspensions, syrups, elixirs, capsules, suppositories, or sterile aqueous or non-aqueous solutions, suspensions or emulsions) containing them in association with a carrier or coating.
