Abstract
991,242. Cooling shaft furnace walls. J. SEPULCHRE, and P. SEPULCHRE. April 18, 1964, No. 16191/64. Heading F4B. The upper part of a shaft furnace is lined by a water-cooled metal jacket 2 and a duct system injects a neutral non-combustible gas, e.g. CO 2 into the shaft at or near the lower end of the jacket. The duct system comprises spaced tuyeres 5 passing downwardly and inwardly through the lining from an annular chamber 6, the system being provided with means for controlling the injection of the gas, which may be recirculated waste gas from the furnace. The tuyeres 5 may be replaced by a similarly inclined annular slot-like duct, Fig. 2 (not shown), formed by two annular plates secured to and dividing the jacket into two compartments connected by pipes. The jacket may form part of a circulating system whereby the heated fluid is used in appliances located externally of the furnace.
