Abstract
Waste liquors or distillates obtained in the oxidation of olefines using copper chloride-palladium chloride catalysts are treated with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to convert a -chlorocarbonyl compounds into more useful products. The hydrogenation may be in the vapour phase; if water is present the pH of the reaction mixture is 0-4. All or part of the hydrogenation product may be returned to the system where oxidation of the olefine is carried out. Suitable hydrogenation catalysts are platinum metals and Raney nickel. In examples, liquors containing the following a -chlorocarbonyl compounds are hydrogenated to give the products stated: (1), (3) chloroacetaldehyde gives acetaldehyde; (2) mono-, di- and trichloroacetaldehyde give ethanol; and (4)-(8) 3-chlorobutanone-2 gives butanone.
