Abstract
Unsaturated aldehydes and/or unsaturated carboxylic acids are produced by reacting an olefine and oxygen in the vapour phase at elevated temperatures in the presence of a catalyst containing nickel, molybdenum, tellurium and oxygen. The catalyst may be deposited on a support and the olefine used is propene or isobutene. The amount of oxygen may be between 1 and 10 parts by volume per volume of olefine. An inert gaseous diluent may be present and the reaction temperature is between 200 DEG C. and 650 DEG C.ALSO:A catalyst containing nickel, molybdenum, tellurium and oxygen is prepared by adding a solution of nickel nitrate to a solution of ammonium molybdate and ammonia at 60 DEG C. and left to precipitate nickel molybdate. This is mixed with tellurium dioxide with water to form a paste. The mixture is then dried and calcined. The proportions of reactants may be varied over wide ranges and the catalyst is used in the oxidation of olefines to acids and aldehydes.
