Abstract

Polyethylene terephthalate is made by mixing 1 mol. of terephthalic acid with 2-15 mols. of ethylene glycol, removing excess ethylene glycol quickly by distillation until the molar ratio is not more than 1 : 1.9, effecting esterification of the ethylene glycol with the terephthalic acid under superatmospheric pressure and then polycondensing the resulting ester in vacuo. The reaction mixture may also include isophthalic acid, adipic acid, sebacic acid, o-, m-, or p-sulphobenzoic acid, diethylene glycol, a polyoxyethylene glycol or ethanolamine. Suitable esterification catalysts are compounds of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, Zn, Cd, Pb, Sb, Mn, Co, Fe, Ti, Zr or La (e.g. a mixture of cobaltous chloride and sodium hydroxide). A suitable polycondensation catalyst is antimony oxide which may be used in admixture with triphenyl phosphate. Reaction may be effected by a batch or continuous process.
