Abstract

990,492. Automatic speed control systems. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 23,1963 [March 6, 1963], No. 8945/63. Heading G3R. In a flying tool control system having a circular saw 7 carried by a bar 13 mounted between cranks 15 to cut a moving tube 3 issuing from a tube mill, the speed of the cranks is controlled firstly in accordance with the speed of the moving tube during cutting, and secondly cyclically during the remainder of the revolution of the crank; the relative effectiveness of the two control components being adjustable to vary the cut length. The field 25 of a Ward Leonard set driving the cranks is controlled in accordance with the difference between signals from a tacho generator 31 driven from the tube mill, and a tachogenerator 29 driven from the WL set. In addition a further control signal dependent on the position of the cranks is derived from a selsyn 47 driven from the WL set and energized from a constant frequency generator 43 having its field energized according to tube speed by tachogenerator 31. This output signal from the selsyn is processed in a phase sense discriminater 49 and subtraction unit 57 to provide a cyclically varying signal, a proportion of which is picked off by potentiometer 61 to determine the crank speed for the remainder of the revolution, and hence the cut tube length. The range of resulting control signals relative to the steady tube speed signal are illustrated in Figs. 6,7 (not shown).
