Abstract

In a process for the production of calcium by heating aluminum powder and calcined lime above 1100 DEG C. under vacuum the product is condensed in a tubular condenser sleeve in the condenser unit which sleeve has its hot end adjacent to the retort and has a baffle therein. The condenser is horizontally disposed about its longitudinal axis and the baffle is vertical and has an area of 30-90% of the cross-sectional area of the sleeve, is situated at a distance from the hot end of the sleeve equal to 30-150% of the average diameter of the sleeve and is preferably at least 50% of said diameter from the cold end of the sleeve. The temperatures are below 650 DEG C. on the cold side of the baffle and above 650 DEG C. on the hot side, a high magnesium crown collecting on the cold side and a high calcium crown on the hot side.
