Abstract
990,289. Gas drying apparatus. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. Aug. 24, 1962 [Sept. 20, 1961], No. 32588/62. Heading BIL. Drying apparatus comprises a tubular receptacle with a cover and base, the base having inlet and outlet ports, with two concrete cylinders contained in the receptacle, both containing desiccant, which cylinders are seated on an annular gasket upon the base; the gas flow being in up the outside cylinder and down out of the central cylinder. In a preferred embodiment, the tubular receptacle R is formed of two parts, a sleeve 3 suspended from a support 2, and a removable cover 4. Air flows in through pipe 16 to inlet port 17 in the base 6, on through the annular seating gasket 18 and through hole 28 in the end cover plate for the desiccant container C. The container is constructed of two cylinders 22 and 23, the inner of which has a nipple 29 which fits into the central axial opening 7 of the base 6. Two plastic washers 12, a spacer 13 and a nut 14 give a friction fit for the nipple. The air passes up through the outer cylinder, back down through the inner cylinder and out through 8. The state of the desiccant may be observed though window 36 by means of a compound 37 which changes colour according to the moisture in the gas. Ideally, the indicator should show an increase in moisture content before the desiccant is exhausted.
