A device for raising and lowering invalids from and into a bath 20 comprises a support 24 for a removable seat or stretcher secured to the head 37 of a tubular member 36 which is slidably and rotatably mounted in a support tube 29 and which is raised by an hydraulic ram 40, 41 and cylinder 41 of which is connected to the core 48 of the tubular member 36 by a thrust bearing. Rotation of the tubular member 36 is limited by engagement of stops 61, 62, Fig. 3, on a catch-plate 60 secured to the lower end of the member 36 with a stop bar 38 secured between the tube 29 and a cylindrical cap 39. A catch bar 56 extending between studs 55 on the lower end of the tube 29 and on the cap 39 is, urged by springs 57 into engagement with the catch-plate 60 which is formed with flat surfaces 63, 64 which engage the bar 56 at the limits of rotation of the member 36 and locate the member 36 at these positions. A fixed stop bolted to the stop bar 38 at a position spaced from its lower end is adapted to engage an upwardly convergent groove in the catchplate 60 to prevent rotation and lowering of the tubular member 36 when the support 24 is at the limit of its angular movement away from the bath and is intermediate its top and bottom positions. In a second embodiment, Fig. 7, the support 94 is secured to a sleeve 92 which is slidable along and rotatable on a tubular post 83 and which rests on a cross-bar 91 extending through longitudinal slots 92 in the post and mounted on a block 90 on the piston 89 of an hydraulic jack 84. The lower end of the sleeve 92 is formed with two pairs of diametrically opposed grooves which are adapted to engage with a pair of balls supported in and projecting above grooves adjacent the ends of the cross-bar 91 so that the sleeve has to be raised slightly to enable it to be rotated from either of the positions in which the balls engage the grooves in the sleeve. An arm 101 secured to the sleeve 92 is adapted to engage guides on a collar 98 secured to the post 83 to prevent rotation and lowering of the sleeve 92 when the support 94 is positioned not overlying the bath and intermediate its top and bottom positions.
