990,155. Coated sheet material. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 18, 1961 [Dec. 16, 1960], No. 43345/60. Heading B2E. [Also in Division B5] A continuous plastic sheet material comprising an embossed thermoplastic unblown layer 20, a thermoplastic blown layer 21 and a knitted fabric 22, is produced by forming the unblown layer as a coating of a thermoplastic composition 4 on an endless band 3 provided with an engraved pattern, heating the layer (at 6) to gel it partially, applying a second layer of a thermoplastic composition 7 containing a blowing agent on top of the first layer, heating the two layers (at 10) to gel completely the first and to gel and blow the second, superimposing a preheated knitted fabric 12 on the hot blown layer an laminating the fabric thereto (by roller 11) and subsequently stripping the sheet material 15 from the endless band. Lamination may be brought about by heat and minimal pressure only, or by the use of an adhesive which may be heat-activatable. The thermoplastic composition may comprise vinyl and vinylidene polymers and copolymers, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, and ethylene and propylene polymers. The compositions may be applied by doctor knife spreading or roller coating. The endless surface may be the surface of a band, roller or shell, e.g. of metal. Specifications 833,416 and 842,147 are referred to.
