Abstract

989,734. Glazing paper web materials. BELOIT IRON WORKS. July 11, 1961 [Sept. 19, 1960], No. 25107/61. Heading D1L. Paper web material W is glazed on one side by wetting it on one side S with water or sizing solution, by a spray, shower or roll-coating, and passing it between a finishing roll and a backing roll 9. The backing roll has a surface of hardness less than 30 P and J (# inch ball); this may be a hard rubber sleeve over a metal core, and may be internally cooled. The finsihing roll is harder than the backing roll, and highly polished and may be plated with chromium or nickel. It is internally heated to give a surface temperature of at least 220‹F. and the two rolls are pressed together at a pressure of 240 to 2400 1b/in<SP>2</SP>, so that the wetted surface, which is in contact with the finishing roll, is dried and glazed. As shown, the apparatus also comprises an air-doctor 6a, fly-rolls 24 and 25, and a second backing roll 10 forming a second pressure rip with the finishing roll. In modification, the glazed surface may be resocketed and the web passed through a similar apparatus, or the unglazed surface may be wetted and the web passed through a similar apparatus with the inglazed surface in contact with the finishing surface to yield a product glazed on both sides.
