Abstract
989,038. Automatic train control. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Nov. 20, 1963 [Nov. 30, 1962], No. 45355/62. Heading B7N. An arrangement for signalling between a point on a railway track and a passing train comprises a pair of coils 7, 8, which are spaced apart along the track and tuned to particular different frequencies by choice of capacitors C1-C8, an amplifier on the train with input and output coils which are coupled when passing each trackside coil whereby the amplifier oscillates at the frequency to which the trackside coil is tuned, decoding means connected to the output of the amplifier for initiating a signalling or like operation on the train defined by the frequencies of the two output signals from the amplifier and alarm means which are brought into operation if on passing a signalling position on the track only one or more than two signals are produced by the amplifier. The integrity of the amplifier is continuously checked by a coil 5 and capacitor 6 on the train tuned to a pilot frequency which loosely couples coils 3 and 4 and provides a low level output from the amplifier which is monitored by a circuit which in the absence of a signal operates the alarm means. The output of the amplifier is connected to a number of tuned filters-filters F1-F4 in group X each set to one of the frequencies to which trackside coil 7 can be tuned, filters F5- F8 in group Y are each set to one of the frequencies to which coil 8 is tuned and filter F9 is tuned to the pilot frequency. Each filter is connected to a magnetic storage device M1- M9 which when energized by a signal via its respective filter provides an output to operate an associated relay R1-R9. Relays R1-R8 are provided with repeat relays R1P-R8P, contacts of which are disposed such that on receipt of one signal in each of groups X and Y one of the circuits A-Q is energized to produce signalling operation or the like on the train. A slow release alarm relay AR is normally energized to prevent operation of the alarm via back contacts of relays R1-R8 and a front contact of relay R9 which is normally energized by the pilot tone. On passing a signalling position, the increased coupling between coils 3 and 4 produced by the trackside coils prevents generation of the pilot signal and relay R9 releases, the alarm relay is now de-energized but if one signal is generated in each of the groups X and Y, one repeater relay in each group picks up and the alarm relay is re-energized before its delay expires via a circuit which includes a front contact of one of the repeater relays in each group and a back contact of relay R9. If two or more signals are received in one group all the repeater relays in that group would be de-energized, as they would be if no signal is received, in each case the relay AR would not be re-energized and the alarm circuit would be operated.
