Abstract

A process for the manufacture of polyamides from polybasic carboxylic acids and organic polyamines comprises polycondensing with polyamines polybasic araliphatic carboxylic acids and/or their amide-forming derivatives, made by the reaction, in the substantial absence of free radical-forming catalysts and in the presence of inhibitors for free radical-forming catalysts and in the presence of inhibitors for free-radical-catalysed addition polymerization of conjugated unsaturated fatty acids or derivatives thereof and aromatic vinyl compounds as described in Specification 988,737. Specified fatty acids are eleostearic, licanic, dehydrogenated castor oil, isomerized linoleic and isomerized poly-ene fatty acids and fats and oils containing fatty acid mixtures, e.g. wood, oiticica, dehydrogenated castor, soyabean, sunflower, cotton seed, safflower, corn, linseed, perilla and marine animal oils. Specified polyamines are ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, hexamethylene diamine and phenylene diamine. Dicarboxylic acids, e.g. adipic, sebacic, iso- and tere-phthalic and polymerized fatty acids may be present in the reaction mixtures. The polyamides are miscible with epoxy resins, phenolics, aminoplasts, natural and synthetic elastomers, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, coumarone resins, polyurethanes, alkyd resins, bitumen extracts, coal tar and asphalts. The examples describe the preparation of polyamides from a polycarboxylic acid derived from styrene and the methyl ester of isomerized soya bean oil fatty acid and: (1) to (3) ethylene diamine and (4) diethylene triamine.
