Abstract
A flocculating agent comprises a condensation product of an epihalohydrin and a polyhexamethylene polyamine of the formula NH2[(CH2)6NH]xH, where x has an average value of 2 to 6 (see Division C3). In Example 5, an aqueous suspension of clay is treated to improve the filtration time.ALSO:The invention comprises condensation products of (A) an epichloro-, bromo- or iodohydrin and (B) a polyhexamethylene polyamine, or mixtures thereof, of formula NH2[(CH2)6NH]xH where x has an average value of 2 to 6, the proportion of epihalohydrin to polyamine being 0.2 to 0.35 gm./moles per 100 grams. Reaction is preferably effected at elevated temperature in aqueous medium using caustic alkali as hydrogen halide acceptor. The addition of the latter is controlled and sulphuric acid may also be added to maintain a pH of 9 to 9.5 until the desired viscosity is obtained. The aqueous solution may be purified by treating at a pH of 5.5 to 7 with a reducing or bleaching agent, e.g. sulphites or sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate. Uses.-Flocculating agents, treating clays and pigments, paper manufacture, dispersing pesticides.ALSO:Condensation products of epihalohydrins and polyhexamethylene polyamines of the formula NH2[(CH2)6NH]xH where x has an average value of 2 to 6 (see Division C3), are used in the production of paper. They enhance the deposition of fillers, e.g. clay, on the pulp and maintain the white water clear, and they may be used with, or instead of, alum. They also impart wet strength, for which they may be introduced either in the beater or in the size box after partial drying of the paper.
