A liquid-cooled and moderated nuclear reactor installation has a surrounding zone to reduce the effect of rupture of the pressure vessel. The pressure vessel is mounted within a containing chamber and the zone between the inner walls of the chamber and the outer walls of the pressure vessel encloses water-filled tanks and a layer of foam plastics. The tanks, if fractured by a pressure vessel explosion, release water which condenses the steam escaping from the reactor. The foam plastic absorbs the explosion impulse. A neutron absorbing substance may be added to the liquid filling of the tanks to form a biological shield.
