Abstract
Specific methylpentene isomers are obtained by dimerizing propylene in the presence of lithium or sodium metal dispersed on an anhydrous potassium compound under conditions favouring the production of isomer A, distilling to separate a fraction rich in isomer A and an isomerization feedstock which is isomerized under conditions favouring the production of isomer B (which may be the same as A) and distilling the isomerization product to recover a fraction rich in isomer B, the remainder being recycled to the isomerization. Suitable potassium compounds used as catalyst supports in the dimerization are the hydroxide, silicate, sulphate, halide and carbonate and the alkali metal is used in amounts of 1-25% by weight of potassium compound. Dimerization is effected at - 10 DEG to 200 DEG C. and 1,000-2,000 p.s.i.g. Where isomers A and B are identical the two distillations may be effected in a single column of at least 60 theoretical plates. Isomerization is effected over silica-alumina or clay at 150-300 DEG C., sodium or alumina at 0-150 DEG C., supported phosphoric acid at 150-300 DEG C. or heteropoly acids at 50-300 DEG C. An example describes the preparation of 4-methylpentene-1 (A) and 2-methylpentene-2 (B).
